Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab has made it to the Grammys nomination list! The first Pakistani woman to do so, Aftab, has landed on the Best New Artist list alongside singers Olivia Rodrigo, FINNEAS, The Kid LAROI and Jimmie Allen has also bagged a nomination for Best Global Performance.

In 1996, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan became the first Pakistani to be nominated for Best Traditional Folk Album and Best World Music Album.

Aftab has been nominated for song ‘Mohabbat’ from her album Vulture Prince, which also made its way to the 2021 summer playlist of former US president Barack Obama.

 

Born and raised in Lahore, Aftab is a great admirer of artists such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and American singer Jeff Buckley.

She attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music where she studied music production and engineering. Her music is heavily influenced by classical eastern music and the ghazal poetry form.

Scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on January 31, 2022, this is the first time that the Grammy’s has bumped its number of nominees from eight to ten in three of the topmost categories — album, song and record of the year.

Abba’s new comeback single, ‘I Still Have Faith in You’ is among the 10 nominees for record of the year, along with Billie Eilish’s (‘Happier Than Ever’), Rodrigo’s (‘Drivers License’), Bieber’s (‘Peaches’) and Batiste’s (‘Freedom’).
