“Sham-E-Faiz,” organized by the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi to pay tribute to Pakistan’s famous Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, was attended by various musicians and artists from the music industry including fans of Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

Singer Ghania Shah enthralled the audience with her beautiful rendition of many of the poet’s famous ghazals. Taking center stage, Shah was accompanied by four musicians playing the tabla, dholak and harmonium. Flute and keyboard players in the background rounded off the arrangement.

Particularly memorable was her performance of the ghazals “Bol Kay Lab Azaad Hain Teray” (Say that your lips are free), Dono Jahan Teri Mohabbat Mein Haar Ke (I lost both worlds for your love) that has been famously sung by artist Mehdi Hassan and Mujh se Pehli si Mohabbat (Don’t ask me to love you as I loved you before) that was made an instant hit by Noor Jehan when she sang it the 1962 film Qaidi (Prisoner). The singer also narrated some of Allama Iqbal’s famous works in the Sham-E-Faiz Event.

The audience appreciated the singer for her wonderful performance that truly captured the soul of Faiz’s poetry.
