Sindh relaxes covid-19 restrictions for weddings and markets
The Sindh government has decided to relax the covid-19 restrictions in Karachi for eateries and weddings. Eateries are now allowed to operate at 70 per cent occupancy and the number of guests for both indoor and outdoor weddings have also been increased.
As per a notification issued by the provincial home department, the decision has been taken in line with NCOC guidelines as the city’s vaccination status improves to “good vaccination progress”, with 40 per cent to 50pc of its population having been inoculated against covid-19.
As per revised orders:
- Eateries have been allowed to operate at 70pc occupancy, up from 50pc earlier
- The maximum number of guests allowed at indoor weddings has been increased to 500 and 1,000 for outdoor weddings. However, only vaccinated individuals will be allowed to attend both indoor and outdoor weddings.
- Amusement parks, water sports facilities and swimming pools can operate at 70pc occupancy
The coronavirus restrictions in other regions of the province will remain the same as before as they continue to report a vaccination rate of below 40pc.
Pfizer to allow generic versions of its covid-19 pill in 95 countries
The US drug maker Pfizer has said that it will allow generic manufacturers to supply its experimental antiviral covid-19 pill to 95 low and middle-income countries through a licensing agreement with international public health group Medicines Patent Pool (MPP).
The voluntary licensing agreement between Pfizer and MPP will allow the United Nations-backed group to grant sub-licenses to qualified generic drug manufacturers to make their own versions of PF-07321332. Pfizer will sell the pills it manufactures under the brand name Paxlovid.
The drug maker has said that the covid-19 pill has reduced the change of hospitalization or death for adults at risk of severe disease by 89 per cent in its clinical trial. The drug will be used in combination with ritonavir, an HIV drug that is already available generically.
“We are extremely pleased to have another weapon in our armoury to protect people from the ravages of COVID-19,” Charles Gore, Executive Director of the Medicines Patent Pool, said in an interview.
Gore said he hoped the generic version of Pfizer’s drug will be available within months of its covid-19 pill in 95 countries.
