In an attempt to boost Pakistan efforts against covid-19 pandemic, the authorities have approved two Chinese vaccines – Sinopharm and Sinovac – for children above 12 years of age.

In a tweet posted today, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has said that the forum’s expert committee had approved administering the vaccines — in addition to Pfizer — to the age group from November 15 onwards.

Meanwhile, the country has administered more than 5.5 million vaccines so far to students between the ages of 12-18 years.

In a separate development, the NCOC head Asad Umar has said that more than half the students between the ages of 12 and 18 had been vaccinated with at least one dose.

“Total students vaccinated so far exceeds 5.5 million. GB leads the way with 68% and Punjab is second with 62pc,” Umar, who is also the federal minister for planning, development, and special initiatives, said.

Overall, 1,239,916 people were vaccinated across the country in the last 24 hours.

Pakistan logs 637 new cases, 9 deaths

Pakistan has recorded a total of 637 new cases in the last 24 hours due to coronavirus, while the positivity rate was recorded at 1.30 per cent. Around 48,882 tests were conducted and the active case count has now reached 23,270.

Meanwhile, 9 more people lost their lives to the virus during the said time period, taking the nationwide death toll to 28,575, as per latest figures shared by the NCOC.

Among the active cases, 1,156 patients are still in critical condition across the country.

The breakdown of cases and deaths is given below.

  • Punjab: 115 new cases, five deaths
  • Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa: 73 new cases, 4 deaths
  • Balochistan: 12 new cases
  • Islamabad: 25 new cases
  • AJK: 3 new cases
  • Gilgit-Baltistan: 3 new cases

Global case load

Globally, the coronavirus caseload has crossed 251.3 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 5.07 million and vaccinations soared to over 7.34 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As per latest figures gathered by the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE), the current global caseload, death toll and the total number number of vaccine doses administered stood at 251,348,332, 5,071,757 and 7,347,735,847, respectively.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 46,784,642 and 758,843, according to the CSSE.

In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 34,388,579 cases and Brazil third with 21,909,298 infections.

The other worst countries with over 3 million cases are the UK (9,451,767), Russia (8,764,713), Turkey (8,317,394), France (7,346,277), Iran (6,012,408), Argentina (5,300,985), Spain (5,038,517), Colombia (5,021,619), Italy (4,826,738), Germany (4,875,843), Indonesia (4,249,323), Mexico (3,831,259), Ukraine (3,277,772) and Poland (3,143,725), the CSSE figures showed.
