Gene linked to doubling risk of covid-19 death

A gene has been identified by British scientists that doubles the risk of dying from covid-19, providing new insights into why some people are more susceptible to the disease than others, while opening up possibilities for targeted medicine.

A total of 60 per cent people with South Asian ancestry carry the high-risk gene, researchers at Oxford University said on Friday, adding the discovery partly explains the high number of deaths seen in some British communities, and the effect of covid-19 in the Indian subcontinent.

The scientists found that the increased risk is not because of a difference in genetic coding of the proteins, but because of differences in the DNA that makes a kind of “switch” to turn a gene on.

Pfizer says antiviral pill cuts risk of severe covid-19 by 89pc

A trial of Pfizer’s experimental antiviral pill for coronavirus was stopped early after the drug was shown to cut by 89 per cent the chances of hospitalization or death for adults at risk of developing severe disease, the company said on Friday.

The results appear to surpass those seen with Merck’s pill, molnupiravir, which was shown last month to halve the likelihood of dying or being hospitalized for covid-19 patients also at high risk of serious illness.

Full trial data is not yet available from either company.

Global case load

Globally, the coronavirus caseload has crossed 249 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 5.03 million and vaccinations soared to over 7.18 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As per latest figures gathered by the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE), the current global caseload, death toll and the total number number of vaccine doses administered stood at 249,087,384, 5,037,731 and 7,189,437,027, respectively.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 46,435,555 and 753,900, according to the CSSE.

In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 34,333,754 cases and Brazil third with 21,862,458 infections.
