Perhaps the most ground-breaking development at Cop26 is the commitment to end deforestation by 2030.

More than 100 world leaders, including China’s Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, participated in the pledge to work collectively “to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030.”

They also said they would implement agricultural policies that will promote sustainable agriculture.

India has pledged to reach the net zero emissions target by 2070, two decades beyond the target set by COP26. While China’s Xi Jinping’s written statement didn’t make any new commitments except to call on countries to “provide support to help developing countries do better.”

Other than that, COP has seen leaders issuing a lot of warnings.

In his opening remarks on Monday, UN chief António Guterres said our fossil fuels “addiction” can bring humanity’s ruin. “We face a stark choice: Either we stop it — or it stops us.

“We are digging our own graves,” he warned.

In a video message, Queen Elizabeth urged world leaders at the COP26 climate summit to “achieve true statesmanship” and create a “safer, stabler future” for the planet.

She urged them to act “for our children and our children’s children” and “rise above the politics of the moment”.

She said many people hoped the “time for words has now moved to the time for action.”

Sir David Attenborough’s speech drew a standing ovation. The 95-year-old British naturalist urged climate delegates to “turn tragedy into triumph.” “In my lifetime I’ve witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful recovery,” he concluded.

Will leaders try to “rewrite” our story? Stay tuned for more on Cop.
