Worldwide death toll crosses 5 million

Globally, the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has crossed 5 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University. As of 08:21 GMT, the global death toll reached 5,000,425, with the total case count exceeding 246.7 million.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in December 2019.

What next for covid-19 after five million deaths?

With the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic crossing the grim number of 5 million deaths, experts believe the pandemic’s future path will depend greatly on vaccinations.

The true number of fatalities is believed to be far higher than the five million based on daily reports provided by health authorities in each country, according to AFP.

The Economist magazine looked at excess mortality and concluded around 17 million have died from Covid. “This figure seems more credible to me,” Pasteur Institute epidemiologist Professor Arnaud Fontanet told AFP.

The strong resurgence in Eastern Europe has confirmed that failure to vaccinate enough people exposes a population to “severe epidemics with an impact on hospitals”, according to Fontanet.

Coronavirus compared with other deadly viruses

The death toll from the covid-19 has crossed 5 million on Monday and it is being termed as ‘worse’ than most other viral epidemics of the 20th and 21st centuries.

There are some notable exceptions to this statement, one of which is the post-World War I Spanish Flu which wiped out more than 50 million people in 1918-19, according to some estimates.

Aside from Spanish Flu, the death toll of covid-19, officially known as SARS-CoV-2, far outstrips that of other viral epidemics in the 21st century. The death toll from corona is higher than swine flu, SARS, Asian flu, Hong Kong Flu, Ebola, Dengue Fever, and AIDS etc.

UAE approves Pfizer vaccine for children aged 5-11

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has authorized the emergency use of Pfizer-BioNtech covid-19 vaccine on children aged 5-11, Reuters quoted the health ministry as saying.

Before this decision the only vaccine that had been approved for use in very young children was the Sinopharm vaccine which was approved for ages 3-17, with Pfizer shots being available to children above 12.

“The results of clinical studies indicated that the vaccine is safe and has given a strong immune response to children between the age of 5 and 11 years,” the statement said of the Pfizer shots.
