At a three-day Youth4Climate event in Milan attended by 400 youth activists from nearly 200 countries, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg roasted world leaders including US president Joe Biden and UK’s Boris Johnson for “shamelessly congratulating themselves” with empty words and promises.

She went on to repeat many of the common expressions used by leaders on climate change highlighting the “intentional lack of action” as a “betrayal of all present and future generations.”

When I say climate change, what do you think of? I think jobs. Green jobs. Green jobs,” she said, referencing Biden’s speeches on the climate crisis.

“There is no Planet B, there is no planet blah, blah, blah,” she said echoing a speech by French president Emmanuel Macron.

She also poked fun at Boris Johnson’s rhetoric.

“This is not about some expensive politically correct dream of bunny hugging, or build back better, blah blah blah, green economy, blah blah blah, net zero by 2050, blah blah blah, climate neutral blah blah blah,” she said.

“This is all we hear from our so-called leaders: words, words that sound great but so far have led to no action, our hopes and dreams drowned in their empty words and promises,” said the 18-year-old.

Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate, also urged leaders to act.

“How long must children sleep hungry because their farms have been washed away, because their crops have dried up because of the extreme weather conditions?” she asked.

The youth forum attendees will submit a joint list of recommendations to ministers at the end of the week as a lead-in to the COP26 summit in November in Glasgow.
