Fourier Intelligence, a Shanghai-based technology company that develops rehabilitation robot exoskeletons, gained a sizable investment from Prosperity7 Ventures, a diversified growth fund of the world’s largest petroleum group Saudi Aramco.

According to company president, Gu Jie, Fourier has built an open robotic technology platform where intelligent rehabilitation systems are developed for medical institutions and patients, China Economic Net (CEN) reported on Saturday.

Rehabilitation robotics is an emerging field in Pakistan, China, and Saudi Arabia and has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry. According to the World Health Organisation, it is a set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in interaction with their environment.

Currently, an estimated 2.4 billion people are living with a health condition that can benefit from rehabilitation. Rehab-robotics can provide people with the opportunity to improve their physical activity whether they are suffering from long or short-term motor impairments.

In recent years, increasing rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes, have fueled the need for rehabilitation.

In China, a conservative estimate by Price Warerhouse Coopers revealed that the population requiring rehabilitation has exceeded 100 million.

In Saudi Arabia, the largest state in the middle East, a national survey reported the prevalence of major disabilities among children to be 6.33%.

In Pakistan, the 6th populous country in the world, rehabilitation services are in need of modernization. Unfortunately the lack of funding and comprehensive health policies at a national level and insufficient resources such as technologies and equipment are preventing millions from accessing quality rehabilitation services.

Fourier’s, ‘Intelligent Rehab Hub,’ hopes to enhance the efficiency of medical care through robot interconnectivity and data sharing. President Gu hopes that in the not too distant future, people will be able to receive intelligent rehabilitation services at reduced costs in nursing homes or even at home.

The company will also build a global smart rehabilitation hospital in collaboration with Saudi Arabia.

“A Community of Health for All requires modern technology. In the wake of the fourth Industrial Revolution, intelligent technologies hold broad prospects to empower the construction of the Health Silk Road,” said Fourier’s president.

Up to now, the company has signed strategic cooperation agreements with Malaysia and Singapore, both are countries along the Belt and Road Initiative.
