The first-ever public school for trans-persons was inaugurated in Multan.

The school was established by the South Punjab Education Department at Government Girls Comprehensive Higher Secondary School, Gulgasht, under a pilot project ‘Transeducation’.

Talking to Dawn, Education Secretary Dr Ehtasham Anwar said that an ‘Accelerated Learning Programme’ (ALP) will be implemented to compensate for the loss of schooling during the pandemic.

16 transpersons have already been enrolled for the ALP which would be divided in four groups – primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary.

“Vocational skills will also be imparted to make them financially independent,” Mr Anwar said.

Classes would start at 4pm and free books, stationery, uniform and shoes will be provided to students along with a free pick and drop service.

Mr. Anwar said transgender faculty and staff will also be hired and volunteer teachers would be teaching when required.

“After this pilot project, we intend to replicate it in the rest of south Punjab from next month,” he added.
