12-year-old Saleena Khawaja, accompanied by her father Yousaf Khawaja, 61, is all set to climb Broad Peak. At 8,047 metres (26,401 ft) it is the twelfth-highest mountain in the Karakoram range, on the border of Pakistan and China. If successful, the young mountaineer, also known as the ‘mountain princess’ will become the youngest person in the world to have summited an 8000er.
In 2019, Shehroze Kashif became the youngest Pakistani to reach this altitude and the youngest ever to summit this peak at the age of 17. At 12, Khawaja is five years his junior.
Khawaja, who hails from a small suburb in Abbottabad developed a passion for mountain climbing along with her father at the tender age of 6. By the time she was 10, she had already summited a number of peaks such as the Mingling Sar 6,050m, Wilyo Sar 6,150m, and Spantik 7,027m.
In 2020, Khawaja met Vanessa O’Brien, a British-American mountaineer and explorer who took the hitherto unsponsored young climber under her wing.
If Saleena and her father are successful in summiting Broad Peak, their next goal will be to climb Mount Everest in 2022. Mulwath Purna, from India is the youngest person to have climbed Mt. Everest and achieved this feat aged 13 years 11 months in 2014.
