A bee research laboratory has been inaugurated in Islamabad, created in collaboration with Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency TiKA to help boost honey production and bee colony productivity in Pakistan,
As per the details, the Advanced Queen Bee Research Laboratory has been established in collaboration with the Honeybee Research Institute (HBRI) and was inaugurated by Turkish Ambassador Ihsan Mustafa Yurdakul and his spouse on Thursday.
The main objectives of the project are to establish advance research lab with molecular level research facilities at HBRI in Pakistan, similar to the Turkish model bee hive. TIKA will be managing all the finances and funds involved in the project and no funds will be demanded from Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) for this project.
According to a statement by TIKA, the agency has also donated 50 Turkish-style beehives for the research. Quality control will be ensured by using the latest technology in the sophisticated laboratory, it added.
“The lab will help improve quality standards for higher honey production in Pakistan,” said Umut, TIKA Islamabad coordinator.
This research lab will also the function of advanced research on queen bee, to help the researchers assess its fitness related criteria such as queen breeding through control mating, live weight, ovariole number, number of spermatozoa, as queen reproduction is influenced by diseases.
Along with that research work on Nosema spores, as well as molecular analyses for viruses like, black queen virus, sac brood virus, deformed wing virus, will also be done in this lab.
During the inauguration ceremony, Muhammad Azeem Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), and Gokhan Umut, Islamabad coordinator for the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), were also present.
